Namaqualand Towns: PORT NOLLOTH * More information and photographs for this page will be posted soon *
HOW TO GET THERE (GPS: 29 15S 16 52E) Follow the R382 from Steinkopf. HISTORY Port Nolloth originated during the copper boom. When surveyed in 1854 it was found to be the most suitable place for a harbor to be used for the shipment of copper ore. Copper was transported by wagon until 1876 when a 96 mile narrow-guage railway was built. Port Nolloth received a new lease of life with the discovery of alluvial diamonds along the coast of Namaqualand in 1926. The diamond industry is heavily protected and the fences that run north along the coast road are not to keep anything in, they are to keep you out. 16 shipwrecks have been recorded to take place in Port Nolloth and on the nearby coastline. ORIGINS OF THE NAME Port Nolloth has a rich history of names. The first known name was Auquatowa (Nama for 'Place where water took old man') and later known as Robbebaai. Later named after MS Nolloth commander of the HMS Frolic who surveyed the coast in 1854.
