Namaqualand Towns: KAMIESKROON
HOW TO GET THERE (GPS: 30 12S 17 56E) On the N7, between Garies and Springbok. HISTORY Four farmers bought a section of the farm Wilgenhoutskloof in 1850 and donated it to the church. A church building was constructed and a town developed. It was named Bowesville after the district surgean of Namaqualand, the Scottish Dr Henry Bowe. The name was later changed to Bowesdorp. It was located in a very pictueresque setting in a narrow valley. Lack of space for further development, and perhaps more important, lack of water, forced the town to relocate. The church bought a section of the farm Koes, about 8km to the south, and moved the church to the new location and the new church building was completed in 1924. Soon the Police Staion, Post Office and others followed to the new town of Kamiesberg, later to be called Kamieskroon. The church elders prohibited the sale and manufacturing of liquor on any of the premises in the new town. A hotel was established outside the town boundaries. ORIGINS OF THE NAME Name refers to the Crown on Kamiesberg, a rock formation on a nearby peak.
