HISTORY
In 1845, Garies was laid out on land given to the Dutch Reformed Church by the owner of the farm Goedeverwagting.

ORIGINS OF THE NAME
A Nama word that means 'couch-grass' (Cynodon dactylon) a common local star grass.
Spelled Th'aries by the Nama.
