HISTORY
Mainly a farming community, with granite mined in the district. The Bitterfontein railway station is at the end of the line from Cape Town. We are still trying to establish why the town boast with a hotel and why the church was built at nearby Nuwerus. Well known sheep farming region. Granite is mined in the area and railed from here to local and export markets.

ORIGINS OF THE NAME
Bitterfontein translate to "Bitter Spring" and is named after the farm it is located on.
