GOEGAP NATURE RESERVE
HOW TO GET THERE (GPS: 28 41S 16 30E) Situated about 15km from Springbok. Clear signposts from the N7 main road will lead you past the airstrip and golf course, to the reserve. DETAIL Situated south east of Springbok in Namaqualand and covering approximately 15 000ha, encompassing the typical granite koppies and sandy plains of Namaqualand. The veld at Goegap (the Nama word for 'waterhole') transformes into a multicoloured carpet of flowers for a few weeks of the year, mainly during August and September. Guided tours can be arranged during the flower season. The reserve incorporates the Hester Malan Wild Flower Garden which includes a succulent display and interesting rock garden at the information centre. Animal life in this arid reserve includes 45 mammal species, 34 reptile species, 92 recorded bird species and 3 amphibian species. Accommodation includes a number of picnic sites, a lapa and kiosk and limited overnight facilities. Other things to do includes circular drives, a 4x4 route, mountain bike route, walking trails and horse trails. Various universities, under guidance of the University of the Witwatersrand operate the Succulant Karoo Research station in the reserve. Field studies on the socio-ecology and evolution of small mammals have been conducted with the main study that of the striped mouse.
